Police have cancelled an emergency situation they declared after a "suspicious device" was found in a public building in Brisbane's north.

On Friday afternoon, residents in Windsor were told to stay inside and drivers were asked to avoid the area, but police revoked the emergency situation about 8.15pm (AEST).

It's unclear what the device was, but a police spokeswoman said bomb squad officers were part of a team investigating the item.

No further information was available.
