Emmy Nominees

The nominees for the 2011 Emmy Awards were announced overnight, with a handful of newcomers joining the list of usual suspects.

Mad Men has gleaned 19 nominations, including Best Drama. But this year could see sex and swords overrule ciggies and skinny ties.

The HBO series Game of Thrones has been generating a very loyal following as of late, but it'll need all the help it can get when it contends with Dexter, The Good Wife, Friday Night Lights and hot favourite Boardwalk Empire for the night's top prize.

In the comedy realm, the critically acclaimed Parks and Recreation was expected to be snubbed this year. But it got a mention in the Best Comedy Series pool with 30 Rock, Glee, The Office, Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.

In other news this past week, the Melbourne International Film Festival is gearing up for its 60th anniversary, while US Internet companies finalise a deal that will prevent users from downloading copyrighted material.

Plus, Spike Lee is set to put a new spin on Oldboy, and Noni Hazlehurst wants your children to go to sleep. Seriously.
