Employment outlook most positive in 10yrs

There's some good news for jobseekers with one third of businesses expecting to hire staff in coming months.

Prospects for jobseekers are looking good in 2015, with one-third of businesses expecting to hire new people in coming months.

The business outlook for employment in the June quarter is the most positive that it's been for 10 years, according to Dun & Bradstreet's latest Business Expectations Survey on Tuesday.

That's despite a softer outlook for sales and earnings, indicating a longer term optimism among business owners, the report said.

Thirty per cent of businesses expect to hire in the June quarter, compared to seven per cent looking to cut back on staff, the report said.

The upbeat data come as official figures show unemployment fell to 6.1 per cent in December.

But despite the better employment outlook, D&B chief executive Gareth Jones said businesses were shedding their optimism amid global and local uncertainty.

"The healthy optimism that was recorded for the first quarter of the year appears to have dissipated amid uncertainty about near-term economic growth and an unsettled operating environment," Mr Jones said.

"Confusing the local scene is a variable currency, falling oil price, sharemarket turbulence and fragile consumer confidence."
