End of war in Pacific commemorated

Seventy years have passed since the war ended in the Pacific and those who fought the threat so close to home will be honoured at a service.

New Zealand is holding a service in Wellington to commemorate the end of World War II in the Pacific 70 years ago while events in London go ahead in the face of a terror threat.

The Queen is determined to head a series of events in London for VP Day despite reports she may be a target of a an ISIS plot, media report.

In New Zealand a commemorative service will be held at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park on Saturday morning.

The service will acknowledge the thousands of New Zealand servicemen and women who served across the Pacific and in all theatres of World War II, Ministry for Culture and Heritage chief executive Paul James says.

The war in the Pacific saw the threat of an enemy close to home and the palpable reality of conflict on the nation's doorstep, he says.

Saturday's service will be attended by veterans from across New Zealand.
