Earthwise, an Australian company based in the Hunter region, is one of the energy saving companies claiming to reduce bills by 25 per cent.

But the New South Wales Fair Trading says the energy saving devices by Earthwise will do nothing but set consumers back thousands of dollars.

"From our results, we found that with the device we actually marginally use more energy," says Vic Smith from the University of Wollongong. "So this device does not do what it claimed to do and is indeed a rort."
