Laura Enever has completed her fairytale run at the Australian Open of Surfing, downing fellow Australian Tyler Wright in the women's final to win the competition.

In a contest that went right down to the final sets, Enever's 14.77 proved to be enough to hold off the challenge of Wright, who went down by just 0.83 points.

Enever, a former Junior World Champion, defeated six-time Tour Champion Stephanie Gilmore in the fifth round, Georgia Fish in the quarters and Tatiana Weston in the semi-finals.

The win over Weston was one of the highlights of the Open, as Enever used all her skill to sneak home 13.16-13.07.

Wright, the 2014 Tour runner-up, defeated Bronte Macaulay and Nikki Van Dijk on the contest's final day but was unable to snatch the victory.

The win is a strong launching pad for Enever towards the upcoming season as she looks to build on her 10th place on last year's Tour.

Kolohe Andino took the men's final with a win over Tahitian young gun Mateia Hiquily.

Andino saved his best ride for last as a brilliant 9.73 ride early on, setting the tone for the 20-year-old and he eventually cruised to a 17.06-10.13 victory.

Earlier, Andino breezed past Brazil's Michael Rodrigues before progressing to the final courtesy of a narrow victory over Stu Kennedy.

Kennedy went down by just 0.14 points in one of the best matches of the week.

Hiquily, who eliminated three time World Champion Mick Fanning in the fifth Round, exceeded expectations in reaching the final but was no match for the more experienced Andino.

The 17-year-old was especially impressive in the semi-final win over Ryan Callinan, with a 17.63 showcasing his immense potential.
