England in command of 3rd Indian Test

England lead India by 319 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand at lunch on day four of the third Test in Southampton.

England were 2-80 in their second innings, a lead of 319 runs, at lunch on Wednesday's fourth day of the third Test against India in Southampton.

England captain Alastair Cook was 29 not out after Gary Ballance was given out for 38 off what became the last ball before lunch.

Ballance was given out caught at short leg off left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Replays showed that while the ball had hit his pad and thigh, it had missed the glove.

Opener Sam Robson was the first wicket to fall for 13 to leave the home side at 1-22. Australian-born Robson fell in worryingly familiar fashion when he nicked a fine Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivery that cut away to Shikhar Dhawan at first slip.

Earlier, India were dismissed for 330 in their first innings, with James Anderson taking 5-53 on his 32nd birthday.

Cook opted against enforcing the follow-on after England had made 7(dec)-569 to give his bowlers a breather on another hot day.

Anderson polished off India, who had resumed on 8-323, with two wickets for one run in six balls to finish with figures of 5-53 in 26.1 overs - his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests.

Stuart Broad took 3-66 in 25 overs as he and Anderson became only the third pace pair after Pakistan's Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram and the West Indies' Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh to have 500 Test wickets between them.

Ajinkya Rahane (54) and Indian captain MS Dhoni (50) were the only batsmen to make half-centuries in the innings.

Anderson had Dhoni out for his overnight 50, when he top-edged an intended pull off a short ball and gave wicketkeeper Jos Buttler a simple catch.

The same combination accounted for Mohammed Shami (five), leaving debutant Pankaj Singh one not out.

India lead the five-match series 1-0 after their 95-run win in the second Test at Lord's.
