England made a blistering start on the opening day of the second Test as Pakistan stuttered to 4-68 at lunch.
Stuart Broad dismissed openers Imam-ul-Haq and Azhar Ali inside the opening 10 overs at Headingley, before Chris Woakes snuffed out a promising partnership by removing Haris Sohail and Asad Shafiq.
England, attempting to salvage a drawn series from 1-0 down following a nine-wicket defeat at Lord's, began the match with four maiden overs, the first time they had done so in a Test since playing Australia at The Oval in 1993.
Opener Imam had been given a brief reprieve following a review into a seemingly strong lbw claim from a Broad delivery on the second ball of the second over.
Seam bowler Broad got his man just four balls later, though, as Imam edged a drive into the hands of captain Joe Root at third slip.
There was a second breakthrough at the start of the 10th over when Broad trapped Ali lbw for two.
Sohail began to form an encouraging third-wicket partnership with Shafiq as the tourists showed signs of recovery following the early losses but the former, having made 28, was then caught by Dawid Malan at second slip from pace bowler Woakes.
The hosts, who had earlier lost the toss on a pitch which appeared ideal for batting, secured another big wicket before lunch when Shafiq, who had moved on to 27, edged a Woakes delivery into the hands of Alastair Cook.
