England on ropes as NZ eye cricket win

New Zealand need five more wickets in the last two sessions of the second Test against England to secure a series draw.

New Zealand were closing in on a series-tying victory in the second and final Test after reducing England to 5-102 on the fifth day at Headingley on Tuesday.

Resuming on 0-44 and requiring a world-record target of 455 to win, England lost Adam Lyth (24) in the fourth over of the day and then three more batsmen - Gary Ballance (6), Ian Bell (1) and Joe Root (0) - in the space of 19 balls to slump to 4-62.

Alastair Cook and Ben Stokes briefly steadied the innings before Stokes (29) edged Kane Williamson behind in the next-to-last over before lunch.

Trailing by 353 runs, England need to bat out a minimum 66 overs to salvage a draw and a 1-0 win in the series.

Cook was 40 not out.

The Black Caps are unbeaten in their last six Test series.
