England veterans ready for extra work

England captain Joe Root says his veteran pacemen James Anderson and Stuart Broad are up for the challenge of having a potentially heavier workload in the final Ashes Test.

With Root opting to replace the injured Chris Woakes with spinner and Test debutant Mason Crane, England will field just three quicks for the first time in the five-match series.

The third paceman for the match starting at the SCG on Thursday is Test tyro Tom Curran, who made his debut in the last match at the MCG.

In that game 35-year-old Anderson toiled for 59 overs and Broad for 52 on a lifeless pitch rated as poor by the ICC.

Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket taker has bowled a series-leading 189.3 overs across the four Tests, with 31-year-old Broad sending down 165, also more than any of the Australian quicks.

With no fourth seamer to fall back on, there could be plenty more work for the veteran new-ball bowlers if Australia bat for a long time at the SCG.

"With it being the last game of the tour as well, there's no reason why they can't just leave everything out on the field," Root said,

"They've played in five-match series before, they know what it's like to come into the last game of this series.

"Always the conversation that was had with the senior guys was making sure they are fully aware that their overs might go up slightly if things don't go our way, with only having three seamers.

"They are both up to the challenge, they are both ready to go."
