Gault retired due to illness after Delhi 2010 but returned to compete in Glasgow and secured third place in the 10 metre air pistol competition.
Australia's Daniel Repacholi won gold and Indian Prakash Nanjappa took silver.
"It didn't matter what colour it was, I've got the 18 medals now," Gault told the BBC.
"That's exactly what the aim was, so it's job done now. It's a weight off my shoulders and I can chillax as they say now.
"I can focus on my next competition, which is in a couple of days' time."
He is level with Australian shooter Phillip Adams, who last competed in 2002, on 18 Games medals and has the chance to go one better and claim the record for himself in the 50m air pistol event on Monday.
