A cross-party bill that aims to legalise same-sex marriage bill will be debated for just 10 minutes in parliament.

The House of Representatives will allow two MPs to speak to the bill for five minutes each on September 7, but only in its Federation Chamber.

One of them will be Labor's Terri Butler who seconded the bill tabled by Liberal Warren Entsch on Monday.
