Essendon times made be tougher: Bassett

Port Adelaide's new assistant coach Nathan Bassett says working at Essendon during their tough times has made him a better AFL coach.

New Port Adelaide assistant Nathan Bassett says he's emerged from Essendon's toughest time as a better AFL coach.

Bassett is Port's new defensive coach, leaving the Bombers after a challenging two-year assistant coaching stint beset by the supplements saga.

"There is great positives from working at Essendon for two years," he told reporters in Adelaide on Monday.

"It was a club that has been through a lot of difficult times the last three years.

"It was a challenging working environment at different times, the stuff that other coaches haven't had to deal with any time in the history of football.

"It was good to learn how to work in an environment like that and build some good relationships and I wish those guys all the best."

Bassett returns to Adelaide, where he played 210 games for the Crows, then coached SANFL club Norwood to consecutive premierships before joining Essendon.

The 38-year-old said he wasn't yet considering himself a senior coach-in-waiting.

"I'm just learning to be a better coach and be the best coach I can be," he said.

"The job drew me here. And the opportunity to work with some good football people.

"I'm here to listen as much as anything. What I have got to add is only minor in comparison to what they have been able to build the last three years."
