Residents should leave now as fast-moving, out-of-control bushfire threatens lives and homes north of Perth.

The bushfire has broken containment lines and has been upgraded, with an emergency warning issued for people in Grey, including the settlement area in the Shire of Dandaragan.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services says homes in Grey are under imminent threat, with people in the area advised to act immediately to survive.

It says the fire is burning in inaccessible terrain east of Indian Ocean Drive and north of Meadows Road and will soon cross Indian Ocean Drive.

Residents should leave if the way is clear and should take the risk of waiting and seeing.

"It is not safe to stay and actively defend, your best chance for survival is to leave now," DFES warns.

"If you cannot leave, you need to get ready to shelter in your home and actively defend it."

An evacuation centre has just opened at the Jurien Bay community centre and oval, DFES said.

The fire is moving fast to the northwest.

It is out of control, unpredictable and likely to shower nearby properties with embers,

The lightning-sparked blaze has burnt 12,000 hectares since it started about 8pm on Tuesday.
