Tour de France winner Cadel Evans could compete at next month's national road titles in Ballarat.

Cycling Australia say Evans has registered for the January 12 men's elite road race.

The final decision will rest on how Evans' pre-season training has gone, as well as the verdict of his BMC team.

The road nationals have not been on Evans' radar for the past nine years because it hasn't fitted into his racing program.

But this year he won't compete at the Tour de France in July and concentrate instead on the Giro d'Italia in May.
