Marisa Strydom, who died while climbing Mount Everest, was farewelled at a memorial service at the Melbourne university where she worked.

Family and friends gathered at the religious centre at Monash University's Clayton campus last Wednesday for the service, according to an update from a fundraising page created to help Dr Strydom's family.

Dr Strydom, also known as Maria, died in the arms of her husband, Melbourne vet Robert Gropel, while descending Mount Everest on May 21.

Dr Strydom's netball club, St Michael's, set up the `For Maria' fundraising page to help cover the costs of repatriating her body.

More than $28,000 has been collected and any surplus funds will be donated to charity when the campaign closes on June 20.

"Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this amazing effort. You have helped bring our friend home," the `For Maria' update read.

"Rob, along with Maria's family would like to send their sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to this campaign."

The finance lecturer succumbed to altitude sickness along with Dutch climber Eric Arnold who was on the same trek. Dr Gropel also needed to be airlifted from the mountain because of illness.

It took a recovery team almost a week to bring the 34-year-old's body down from 8000 metres to Camp 2 and fly her to Kathmandu.
