Former Sydney bikie boss Sam Ibrahim will fight to stay in Australia after Immigration Minister Peter Dutton reportedly cancelled his visa on character grounds.

A spokesman for Mr Dutton said he could not comment on individual cases but it is understood Ibrahim, who is behind bars awaiting trial on gun-trafficking charges, has been given 28 days to appeal against the minister's decision.

Ibrahim's barrister said it is "outrageous".

"We'll be clearly, fairly and squarely challenging the minister's, the exercise of his discretion," Julieanne Levick told Sky News.

John Ibrahim, the Sydney identity and nightclub tsar, reportedly told the network his elder brother did not hold a passport and had not left Australia since arriving from Lebanon as a child.

Mr Dutton said on Saturday that protecting the Australian community is a government priority.

"We won't tolerate people coming to our country and thinking they can commit serious crime and remain here," he said in a statement.

"If they're here on a visa and involved in criminal activity, we will act to remove them and eliminate the threat they pose to that community."

Ibrahim is a former president of the Parramatta chapter of the Nomads outlaw motorcycle gang.
