Tara Brown, 24, suffered critical head injuries during the horrific assault on Tuesday morning.

Her former partner, ex-Bandidos bikie gang member Lionel Patea, was charged with several offences including attempted murder at his bedside at Gold Coast University Hospital on Wednesday.

Patea is in hospital after suffering self-inflicted stab wounds prior to his arrest on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Brian Swan said while Ms Brown remained in a critical condition, medical advice suggested she wouldn't survive.

Police allege Patea ran Ms Brown's car off the road and into the front yard of a Molendinar house, then used a cast-iron fire hydrant cover to bash the woman repeatedly in the face while she was trapped in the damaged vehicle. Bystanders then intervened, when it is alleged Patea stole a ute and fled the scene.

One friend, Sasha Mahuika, described Ms Brown as a great mother.

"She's a beautiful girl ... a great mother. Humble, kind, just a real cool girl," Ms Mahuika said.

"There's always going to be a sense of anger within everyone; family, her friends," she said.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the assault or has any further information to share to contact them.
