Ex-Dragons coach ready for Super League

Steve Price says he's better suited to being a head coach now than when in charge of St George Illawarra, as he gets ready to take over at Warrington.

Warrington coach Steve Price believes he's better suited to leading a team now than when he was handed the reins at St George Illawarra in 2012.

Price was announced as the new Wolves mentor last week, replacing long-time coach Tony Smith who departed at the end of the Super League season, after missing out on the finals.

The 40-year-old was an integral part of Wayne Bennett's backroom team at St George Illawarra and credited with playing a key part in the joint-venture's maiden premiership success in 2010.

He played a similar role in Cronulla's triumph last year as Shane Flanagan's No.2 but struggled in the top job at the Dragons after replacing Bennett in 2012 and was sacked two-and-a-half years later.

But after a successful stint at the Sharks, Price says he's rejuvenated and ready again for the demands of a head coaching role.

"As the head coach you are the father, as the assistant coach you are the big brother," Price told BBC Radio.

"There is a lot of external expectation as a head coach and the key there is management.

"You have to be really resilient with your management and with your players on and off the field.

"It is a totally different job description from assistant to head coach. I've been in that position for a number of years now.

"I like to think I am now a lot more resilient and a lot better for that experience."

Price will move to England with his family later this month and has been fully briefed about what he can expect from Newcastle coach Nathan Brown who spent six years in Super League with Huddersfield and St Helens.

"I've always has an interest in Super League since I was a kid." he said.

"It was a tough year for Warrington, but it is a good club with a good owner, good roster and strong resources.

"Just 12 months ago they were just 80 minutes away from winning the competition."
