Former NRL and NSW Origin coach Graham Murray is back in hospital after a suspected heart attack.

Former NSW State of Origin coach Graham Murray's second health scare in months has shocked the 58-year-old's friends.

Murray is in the intensive care unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane after suffering a suspected heart attack.

It's the second time in less than six months Murray has been in hospital after spending a week in a coma following a heart attack in March.

That illness forced the former North Queensland and Sydney Roosters coach to step down from his role as head coach of Queensland Cup team Wynnum-Manly.

Murray had been a regular visitor to the club's training in recent weeks as he recovered and club chief executive Scott Thornton said the news he was back in hospital was a big blow.

"He was travelling well," Thornton told AAP.

"It's a bit of a shock he's gone down again."

Thornton, who spent the past week in camp with the Queensland Origin team, said he was hoping to visit Murray in the next couple of days.

He said he didn't know when Murray became ill but had received the news from his family on Wednesday.

Thornton said Murray was in good hands after being looked after by the staff at the same hospital in March.

Wynnum-Manly captain Luke Dalziel-Don told the Wynnum Herald the news had taken the club's players by surprise.

"I've been catching up with him almost every week lately and he's been in good spirits and pretty jovial," Dalziel-Don said.

"To hear this is not good at all. He's just in our thoughts and we wish him all the best."

Murray's rugby league career began as a player for Parramatta and South Sydney before he moved into coaching.

As well as his time at the Cowboys and Roosters, Murray coached the Blues in the 2006 and 2007 Origin campaigns and had stints at the helm of the Leeds Rhinos in England, Super League outfit Hunter Mariners and the Illawarra Steelers in the NSW Rugby League.
