Former Victorian senator Ricky Muir is considering a tilt at state politics.

Mr Muir at the weekend announced he had quit the Australian Motoring Enthusiasts Party, which has been deregistered as a party at a federal level but still exists as an organisation.

"This move does not signal the end of politics for me - for now my family business is my focus," he said in a statement on Facebook.

"But perhaps new political beginnings could be on the cards.

"I have watched with apprehension as my home electorate of Gippsland has been subject to political football, particularly at a state level, and feel Gippsland deserves better.

"I may be left with no other option but to stand up for my fellow Gippslanders if the majors won't. Time will tell."

Mr Muir lost his seat at the 2016 election after one term in the Senate.

He was an unlikely victor in 2013, having gained a record-low 0.51 per cent primary vote but gained preferences from about 20 other parties to get him over the line.
