Ex-soldier sorry for 'Jedi Council' emails

The former Australian army officer at the centre of the "Jedi Council" porn ring says his behaviour was deplorable.

The former soldier ringleader of the "Jedi Council" porn ring has publicly apologised for his "deplorable" behaviour.

Hastings Fredrickson has told the Seven Network he is broke and his career is in tatters after he pleaded guilty to secretly filming himself having sex with a woman and distributing the photos.

"It was deplorable behaviour, it was something we shouldn't have done, and like most things, it just ratcheted up from what started off as a bit of a joke and just spilled over as something it shouldn't have," Fredrickson told Seven on Saturday.

Calling himself the Wolf of Woolloomooloo, the Australian Defence Force contractor sent a series of emails in 2010 to colleagues who were part of a club they called the "Jedi Council".

The emails - including secret images and pictures of women with degrading captions - were tagged "BBDA, back blast danger area".

"In other words, if you get this look over your shoulder, make sure no one's behind you," he said.

Fredrickson said his thoughts were with the victim, who had rejected his apology when he called her.

"(She) yelled abuse at me and hung up on me, so yeah ... of course, I deserve everything I got," he said.

The former soldier said the army's culture had contributed to the group's attitude towards women.

"It was encouraged in smaller circles and things like that, in arms units," he said.

"We were sort of soldiers of the '90s where that sort of behaviour was tolerated, if not applauded, in some respects.

"I'm not condoning it, I'm just saying that was part of the culture that was involved."

Fredrickson was given a 15-month suspended jail sentence in March.
