Former Telstra CEO David Thodey has joined the board of accounting software firm Xero.

Mr Thodey, who is chair of Australian scientific research agency CSIRO, will become a non-executive director in a role that is also being vacated by Bill Veghte at Xero's annual meeting in August.

Mr Veghte is retiring from the board of the New Zealand-based company after more than five years.

"During this time, we added 1.5 million subscribers to reach 1.8 million, expanded globally and evolved the Xero experience to help improve the lives of people in small businesses around the world," Mr Veghte said.

Mr Thodey said he was excited about contributing to the company's future direction.

"I've watched Xero become a great global technology business that has grown and scaled from New Zealand," he said.
