Victoria's former police chief Christine Nixon has reportedly admitted to an "oversight" after being fined more than $700 for driving an unregistered car.

Police say a 60-year-old woman was pulled over on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula Freeway on Tuesday afternoon during a traffic operation.

"The vehicle was intercepted and she was issued with a fine for $722," a police spokeswoman said.

Police could not confirm the identity of the driver.

But the former chief commissioner has since spoken off-air with Fairfax Radio and reportedly confirmed she was behind the wheel.

She said she was driving a new car and the unpaid registration was an oversight, Fairfax Radio reported.

Ms Nixon, who was Australia's first female state police chief, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

She was heavily criticised for going out to dinner during the height of the Black Saturday bushfires, but then led recovery efforts after the fires.

Ms Nixon has since begun a career as a public speaker and consultant.
