Former Werder Bremen star Marco Bode will take over as new supervisory board boss of the Bundesliga club sometime this year, according to current chairman Willi Lemke on Wednesday.
"I will move into the background, Marco will be my successor. That will happen before 2015 or 2016," Lemke told dpa on Wednesday.
The head of Werder's supervisory board said Tuesday that he will step down from his post before the end of his term of office in 2016.
Just hours later, Bode told the Weser Kurier and Kreiszeitung Syke that he would be ready to take over sooner than that.
"I sense a commitment to make me more involved than beforehand," said Bode, who is serving as a member of the supervisory board with Werder.
Bode also called Lemke and told him of his readiness to take over.
"I welcome very much the fact that Marco called me today and am happy it worked out," said the 69-year-old former personnel boss.
Over the weekend, Guenter Netzer spoke out in favour of the 45-year-old Bode.
"He is highly intelligent, highly eloquent and an impeccable character. These kinds of people belong in significant positions," said Netzer, who injected Werder Bremen with seven million euros ($A10.5 million) as the executive director of Bremen's marketing partner Infront.
Werder are currently last in the Bundesliga with just four points and zero victories through seven rounds.
