Former Westpac boss Gail Kelly has joined the board of Woolworths Holdings in South Africa.
Ms Kelly, who was born in South Africa and grew up there, will become a non-executive director of the South African-based retailer from October 1.
Woolworths owns department store David Jones and the Country Road clothing brand in Australia.
"We are thrilled that Gail is joining our board," Woolworth Holdings chairman Simon Susman said on Thursday.
"As our group grows to become a major southern hemisphere retailer of scale, it is a real honour to have a world-class mind such as Gail's to help us navigate the fast-moving environment of global retail."
Ms Kelly said that she always had a love for the Woolworths brand whilst growing up in South Africa and had closely observed the company's growth path in Australia.
"I am looking forward to working with my fellow directors and the Woolworths team, both in South Africa and in Australia, to assist them on their ambition of becoming a leading southern hemisphere retailer," Ms Kelly said.
Ms Kelly retired from Westpac in February after seven years at the helm.
Ms Kelly's current responsibilities include being a member of the Group of Thirty and the Global Board of Advisors at the US Council on Foreign Relations.
She is also a director of the Business Council of Australia and ambassador for women's empowerment for CARE Australia.
Ms Kelly's 35-year banking career was split equally between South Africa and Australia.
Ms Kelly held a number of senior executive position at the Nedbank Group in South Africa.
