Excuses why Australians still get sunburnt

The Cancer Council says it only takes a few minutes outside for sun damage to begin, yet people are still making excuses for getting sunburnt.

THE TOP FIVE EXCUSES AUSTRALIANS GAVE FOR GETTING SUNBURNT IN 2016.

1. "It was a hot sunny day, so I was outside too long" (37 per cent)

REMEDY: Don't be complacent. Seek shade, avoid outside activities during peak UV times.

2. "I didn't think I needed protection." (35 per cent)

REMEDY: Forget about the heat and focus on the UV level. When UV is at level three, sun protection is required.

3. "My sunscreen wore off or I missed an area when applying sunscreen." (25 per cent)

REMEDY: Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you go outside and re-apply every two hours.

4. "I didn't use or wear sun protection" (24 per cent)

REMEDY: Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide. Slip on sun-protective clothing; Slop on broad spectrum sunscreen; Slap on a hat; Seek shade; Slide on sunglasses.

5. "I couldn't be bothered' and "I tried to get a suntan". (8 per cent)

REMEDY: A tan is not healthy. Just because you don't burn doesn't mean you aren't at risk of skin cancer.
