The Turnbull government: what happens now?

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE TURNBULL GOVERNMENT

* Malcolm Turnbull will be sworn in as Australia's 29th prime minister by the governor-general.

* Liberals MPs regather for their regular parliamentary sitting week meeting on Tuesday morning.

* Liberals and Nationals MPs meet for a joint coalition parties meeting.

* Turnbull meets with Abbott-appointed ministers, telling them they are welcome to stay in their jobs until he settles on a reshuffle.

* Ministers in the firing line include Treasurer Joe Hockey, Employment Minister Eric Abetz and Defence Minister Kevin Andrews.

* The winners include Scott Morrison, likely to be treasurer, and more women in senior ranks including Assistant Immigration Minister Michaelia Cash, Human Services Minister Marise Payne and parliamentary secretary Kelly O'Dwyer.

* Turnbull will front his first question time in parliament at 2pm.

* The new prime minister has indicated he will unveil his new cabinet and ministry at the end of the sitting week.
