An improvised explosive device and drugs have been found in a car following a tip-off in the state's central west.

Police have charged two men after their car was stopped on Burrendong Way, Orange about 10.40pm on Monday, after receiving information from an anonymous source.

Two men, aged 35 and 50, were in the car and both were spoken to by police before being searched.

Officers will allege they located an amount of cannabis and amphetamine in their possession.

The two men were arrested as police searched the white Falcon in and allegedly discovered a round object about the size of a tennis ball in the boot covered in electrical tape with a wick protruding from the top.

The item was examined by a bomb technician from Bathurst Police Station who confirmed the object was an improvised explosive device.

A 35-year-old man has been charged with two counts of possessing a prohibited drug and possessing explosives.

He was refused bail and will appear in Orange Local Court on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old man was charged with drug possession and bailed to appear in Orange Local Court on October 30.
