New NBA recruit Dante Exum headlines Australia's 17-man squad ahead of this year's basketball World Cup in the absence of two of the country's biggest names.

Injury has forced both championship-winning San Antonio Spurs star Patty Mills and Golden State Warriors' Andrew Bogut out of the tournament, which tips off late August in Spain.

Mills underwent shoulder surgery a fortnight ago and isn't expected to play until next year.

Meanwhile Bogut, who's been dogged by injury the past few years, announced earlier this month he would not be available for Australia's campaign.

Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis on Tuesday named four NBA players in his preliminary squad, which will be cut down to 12 after a week-long camp in Canberra starting next week.

They include Exum - who was selected by the Utah Jazz with pick No.5 in June's Draft - Mills' Spurs teammate Aron Baynes, Cleveland Cavaliers' Matthew Dellavedova and Cameron Bairstow, fresh from being drafted by Chicago Bulls.

"I'm very pleased with the group of players we have coming into camp," Lemanis said.

"We have a good mix of experience and youth and I'm looking forward to seeing it all come together.

"I know that all of us still feel disappointed for Patty (Mills) and wish him all the best in his recovery - but as a group, there is still belief and confidence that we will perform well at the World Cup."

Rising stars Chris Goulding and Brock Motum, who are both in action at this week's NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, have also been named, as has teenage prodigy Ben Simmons.

Six players from Australia's NBL competition also feature, in addition to a handful of European-based stars.

"We now not only have players in the world's best seasonal competitions, but they are playing significant roles with their teams," Lemanis added.

"This is yet another reflection of our strength as a basketball nation and the development our players receive through our high performance pathways."

Preliminary Boomers squad: David Andersen (Strasbourg, France), Cameron Bairstow (Chicago Bulls, NBA), Aron Baynes (San Antonio Spurs, NBA), Angus Brandt (Sydney Kings, NBL), Ryan Broekhoff (Besiktas, Turkey), Matthew Dellavedova (Cleveland Cavaliers, NBA), Dante Exum (Utah Jazz, NBA), Adam Gibson (Adelaide 36ers, NBL), Chris Goulding (Melbourne United, NBL), Joe Ingles (Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Israel), Nathan Jawai (Galatasaray, Turkey), Damian Martin (Perth Wildcats, NBL), Brock Motum (Bologna, Italy), Brad Newley (Gran Canaria, Spain), Ben Simmons (Montverde Academy, USA), Lucas Walker (Melbourne United, NBL), Mark Worthington (Melbourne United, NBL)
