Exum ranks poorly in NBA ratings

Veteran floor leader Chris Paul has topped a new list of NBA point guards, but the news isn't so good for Australia's Dante Exum.

Australian teenager Dante Exum has been ranked the worst starting point guard in the NBA.

US sports giant ESPN released its rankings on Monday, giving grades to 30 point guards in four categories: leadership; defence; shooting/scoring; and passing/playmaking.

The Los Angeles Clippers' Chris Paul earned the number one ranking after topping the leadership, defence and playmaking categories.

MVP candidates Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors) and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder) finished second and third respectively.

John Wall (Washington Wizards) was fourth, Mike Conley (Memphis Grizzlies) fifth and Damien Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers) sixth.

Exum came in 30th, with ESPN giving him the lowest rating for leadership, second poorest for playmaking and third from the bottom in scoring.

He tied for 23rd in defence.

The Los Angeles Lakers' Jeremy Lin and Philadelphia 76ers' Isaiah Canaan were 28th and 29th overall respectively.

It has been a rollercoaster rookie year for Exum after the Utah Jazz selected him straight out of high school in Canberra with the fifth pick of the NBA Draft.

While most rookies have spent the year on the bench, Jazz coach Quin Snyder gave the guard a baptism of fire.

The list is filled with veteran floor leaders although another rookie, Elfrid Payton, selected 10th in the 2014 draft by the Orlando Magic, was given better marks than Exum and came in 27th.
