Eye injury doesn't halt Force winger

Western Force winger Masivesi Dakuwaqa has the potential to become the team's new cult hero following his impressive debut against the Crusaders.

Western Force coach Tim Sampson says it's amazing how Masivesi Dakuwaqa has been able to overcome a childhood eye injury to forge a professional career in rugby.

Dakuwaqa is almost completely blind in his left eye following a rubber-band mishap in primary school.

But the 24-year-old hasn't let the injury hold him back in life.

He won Olympic gold with Fiji's rugby sevens team in 2016, and joined NRL side Canberra Raiders a year later.

Now, he's forging a career with the Force, who are competing in World Series Rugby.

Dakuwaqa made his Force debut in last week's 44-8 loss to the Crusaders, and he was arguably his team's best player.

His crash-and-bash run in the 10th minute set up the Force's only try.

"It's amazing. He suffered a freak accident some years back," Sampson said.

"For him to showcase the skills that he dishes up is pretty impressive considering.

"I think it's something he's gotten used to over the years.

"You wouldn't know (he's blind in one eye) looking at how he plays. He's a breath of fresh air for us. He's very popular amongst the squad.

"He adds a different dynamic to the side with his size and speed. He's someone who I think will develop into a quality player."

The Force have just three more matches remaining in this year's WSR.

They take on a Samoan representative side on July 14, before facing off against Hong Kong (August 10) and Panasonic Wild Knights (August 17).

Next year, WSR will convert into a proper competition format taking in teams from the Asia Pacific region.
