An alert passenger sparked the arrest of a teenager wanted by NSW police after checking Facebook.

The passenger was browsing the local police page while on a train travelling from Wagga Wagga to Sydney when he saw a photo of an 18-year-old male.

Looking across the carriage, he recognised the teen who was sitting with a female friend and quickly uploaded a photo, along with a series of messages, to alert the police.

Officers stopped the train at Cootamundra and arrested the 18-year-old man.

Superintendent Bob Noble praised the passenger on Saturday's train, and said an increasing number of cases are being solved through the help of social media.

"This man's efforts were extraordinary and his quick thinking demonstrates how police and the community are working together on social media sites to interact and solve crimes," Superintendent Noble said.

The teen has been charged with two counts of break and enter and trespass, and is due to appear at Wagga Wagga Local court on Wednesday.
