Facebook has unveiled a new feature that will encourage people to donate to charities straight from their newsfeed.

The "Donate" feature will begin to appear beside posts by non-profit organisations and at the top of their Facebook pages.

Users will also be able to share posts from charities with friends.

"We hope this will help increase donations as people encourage their friends to donate to the causes that are important to them," Facebook said in a blogpost announcing the feature.

"With a community of over one billion people on Facebook, every local cause can become a global one and every global cause can become a personal movement."

Facebook has partnered with twenty charities, including Unicef, Oxfam America, and the World Wildlife Fund, and plans to extend it further soon.

In November, the social media giant partnered with the International Red Cross to let people donate directly to relief efforts in the Philippines, which was ravaged by Typhoon Haiyan.
