What is the Henry tax review, and who was involved in drafting the recommendations?

- Treasurer Wayne Swan announced a comprehensive review of the nation's tax system when he delivered his first budget on May 13, 2008.

- Headed by Treasury secretary Ken Henry, it looked at all federal, state and local government taxes, but not the GST.

- Other panel members included Professor John Piggott from the University of NSW, Australian Industry Group head Heather Ridout, former tax official Greg Smith and Jeff Harmer from the families department.

- Mr Swan and Dr Henry released a 343-page discussion paper, Australia's Future Tax System, to form the framework for the review August 2008.

- Review panel releases its first consultation paper, with 500 submissions in December 2008.

- Panel holds public meetings in all capital cities, Wagga Wagga and Geelong, with Dr Henry seeking "perspectives of everyday citizens" in March 2009.

- Mr Swan is handed the final report from the 18-month inquiry in December 2009

- Mr Swan releases the Henry tax review on May 2, nine days before the budget. A Resources Profit Tax, changes to superannuation, and cuts to company tax are announced.

- Government says more changes are to come.
