Religious leaders from six faiths are heading to Canberra to back Pope Francis' call for urgent action to cut carbon emissions.

In his first papal encyclical, Pope Francis said climate change was mostly down to human activity and policies were needed to reduce fossil fuels and develop renewable energy.

"Protecting the environment is a moral imperative and not acting to address this problem is a form of moral pollution," Grand Mufti of Australia Ibrahim Abu Mohammed said in a statement ahead of Monday's visit by Buddhist, Anglican, Hindu, Catholic, Jewish and Muslim leaders.
