Fake-name 'sheikh' could go free early

Self-proclaimed Sydney sheikh Junaid Thorne, who controversially supported the Charlie Hebdo attack, could be released early for his false ID sentence.

Self-proclaimed sheikh Junaid Thorne could be released early from a NSW jail to serve his sentence in the community for boarding a domestic flight under a fake name.

The 26-year-old, who controversially supported the Charlie Hebdo attack, was sentenced to a minimum of six months in jail at Sydney's Central Local Court in June after pleading guilty to two aviation offences.

Judge Andrew Scotting told an appeal hearing at the District Court on Wednesday that an intensive corrections order, under which jail time is served in the community under supervision and with conditions, needed to be considered.
