Fake NSW cop assault accused denied bail

Bail has been denied to a man who allegedly indecently assaulted a woman while pretending to be a police officer.

A man who allegedly impersonated a police officer and detained and indecently assaulted a young woman has been denied bail.

Daniel Curtin, 33, did not apply for bail at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, and it was formally denied by Magistrate David Day.

Police allege Curtin told an 18-year-old woman he was an officer after approaching her at a park in Bellbird, in the central Hunter region, early on November 21.

"He asked the woman to enter his car, a white-coloured sedan, to which she complied," police said.

"He allegedly indecently assaulted the woman as he drove around the area before dropping her back at the same park where he picked her up."

Curtin, of Singleton, was arrested a week later at Newcastle Local Court, which he was attending for other matters.

He will remain behind bars until he fronts the same court on January 14.
