A man who allegedly impersonated a police officer and carried out breath tests on random drivers has been granted bail after being diagnosed with cancer.

The NSW Supreme Court heard on Wednesday that Steven Fraser, 45, had a medical condition that couldn't be properly treated in custody.

Fraser is accused of pretending to be a police officer, pulling people over on separate occasions on Sydney roads and taking their licences in January.

On January 20, he allegedly flashed blue lights and pulled over a woman at Mount Annan on Sydney's southwest fringe.

Fraser allegedly took her licence and told her it had been suspended.

There were similar incidents at Cecil Hill and Bringelly, including when Fraser allegedly carried out breath tests.

The court heard that Fraser, after a lump in his abdomen was found to be benign in 2010, had since been diagnosed with cancer.

A prison doctor reported Fraser would need continuing specialist treatment, which wasn't available in custody.

In a report tendered in court, another doctor stated Fraser's mental state had made his time behind bars "onerous and detrimental" to his mental health.

Fraser's fiance offered a $2000 surety as a condition of his bail, the court heard.

Justice Geoffrey Bellew granted Fraser's release under strict conditions.
