Firefighters who lost their lives working to save their communities from blazes have been have been remembered in Victoria.

The Country Fire Authority's commemoration will honour the 79 members who died at a ceremony on Sunday at Healesville, northeast of Melbourne.

"We will continue to carry the memories and heroism of those fallen firefighters and reflect on their legacy that lives on in CFA," chief executive Gavin Freeman said.

The ceremony would also mark the 10th anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires which left 173 people dead, including one firefighter.

"We reflect on the incredible courage and bravery shown by CFA members, their families and the affected communities across the state as a result of those devastating fires," Mr Freeman said of the 2009 fires.

The memorial this year also looked back on the 1939 fires which led to the establishment of the CFA, the 1949 Tarrawingee fire where 10 firefighters died and a blaze in 1969 where two volunteers perished.

Ceremonial banners embroidered with each fallen firefighter's name will be taken to each memorial service to represent those commemorated.

The annual memorial service has been held around Victoria since 1998.
