'False alarm' clears Barcelona's basilica

A "fasle alarm" saw Spanish police clear Barcelona's famous Sagrada Familia less than a month after a van attack in the city killed 16 people.

Catalan police say an incident near the city's landmark basilica was a "false alarm" and no explosives found in suspicious van.

Earlier on Tuesday police sent a bomb squad to check a van parked next to Barcelona's world-famous Sagrada Familia church, which was evacuated as part of an anti-terrorism operation.

Police tweeted that they have cordoned off the Sagrada Familia and asked people to avoid the area while the operation is carried out.

Barcelona was hit by attacks last month when militant Islamists drove a van down the city's Las Ramblas boulevard and carried out a follow-up attack in a nearby resort town, killing 16 people in total, including seven-year-old Australian boy Julian Cadman.

The Sagrada Familia, designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, attracts millions of tourists from around the world every year.
