Shark attack victim Jay Muscat loved the ocean and was most happy fishing and diving, his family says.

The 17-year-old died spearfishing when a suspected white pointer attacked him at Cheynes Beach, near Albany on Monday.

In a statement his family said they were all devastated over the sudden and tragic loss of their loving son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend.

They said Jay, who had just completed Year 12, had loved life to the full and was enjoying his new found freedom of the summer break with friends before finding a job.

"Jay would take any chance to go fishing, diving or swimming."

"From a very early age it was obvious that fishing was his passion and was always going to be a huge part of his life, we can take some comfort in knowing Jay passed doing something he loved."

Jay was also a huge Hawthorn supporter like his dad, and team memorabilia were the most worn items in his wardrobe, they said.

"We would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt support and kind words, as our family grieves."
