Fanning and Burrow struggle in Fiji

Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow will have to surf through the repechage round at the Fiji Pro but Joel Parkinson and Kelly Slater did enjoy first up wins.

Australians Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow are amongst the big name surfers to face a relegation round at Cloudbreak after failing to win through their initial heats at the Fiji Pro.

In three to five feet surf at the fifth event of the 11-contest world surfing tour, three-time world champion Fanning and the experienced Burrow didn't do enough to advance directly to the third round.

Hawaii's Fredrick Patacchia secured the first barrel of the event for a 7.93 and the lead, his late 8.10 wave ensuring a 16.03 score to put him ahead of defending world champion Fanning (12.83) and compatriot Glenn Hall (12.67).

Burrow (9.83) was last in an all-Australian heat behind Mitch Coleborn (12.96) and Adrian Buchan (AUS) 10.23 and also faces a repechage on Wednesday.

There was better news for 2012 world champion Joel Parkinson and fellow Australians Owen Wright and Julian Wilson, who all progressed through to round three.

America's 11-time world champion Kelly Slater was amongst the other round one winners.
