French politics is facing a resurgent far right movement that moderates fear will destabilise the country.

France's Prime Minister Manuel Valls says the anti-immigration National Front party - led by Marine Le Pen - is at the "gates of power".

Recent opinion polls show Ms Le Pen would beat President Francois Hollande in the event of a run off between them for the presidency in 2017.

Dr Elizabeth Rechniewski is a French politics expert at the University of Sydney.

She told Darren Mara the rise of the National Front is the result of a perfect storm brewing in French politics.
