Farrell pitches in to Murrayfield debate

England will be looking to get their Six Nations title bid back on course at Murrayfield after a see-saw opening match loss to France.

England backs coach Andy Farrell says the visitors will cope with anything a troubling Murrayfield pitch throws at them when they face Scotland in the Calcutta Cup.

The once pristine grass has succumbed to a parasitic infection which has created an unstable surface and one that threatens to turn the latest edition of rugby union's oldest international fixture into something of a lottery should forecast rain descend on the Edinburgh ground on Saturday.

England had the traditional pre-match 'captain's run' on Friday and afterwards Farrell said: "We knew it wouldn't be the best. It was a cutting up a little bit while we were training.

"Who knows what will happen? It could teem it down and the pitch would be very bad anyway. It's the same for both sides.

"It really doesn't bother us. We're ready for any type of game."

England will be looking to get their Six Nations title bid back on course after a see-saw opening match against France ended in a last gasp 26-24 defeat in Paris.

But former England rugby union and Great Britain rugby league international Farrell insisted the team's morale remained high despite that defeat.

"We want to build on what we started against France. The boys are pretty excited about this one," he said.

"We played at a hectic pace in Paris. We were the aggressors of that and the ones pushing the pace. It was the most hectic game of the opening round.

"The players are excited about that and that's the standard we want to repeat.

"Now we need to tidy up a few bits of detail where we can get better and put that into consideration."
