The death of a man shot behind the wheel of his car in Darwin was a targeted attack, police say.

The 25-year-old was found in the driver's seat of his gold Toyota Camry about 2.30am on Saturday.

The car had smashed into the fence of a front yard on Union Terrace, Wagaman, in Darwin's northern suburbs.

A man who was a passenger in the car has been questioned by police for the most of the day.

The identity of the deceased hasn't been released.

Detectives have been doorknocking local residents and have called for anyone who was on the street around the time of the incident to come forward.

"At this stage police believe a second vehicle may have been involved," Detective Acting Superintendent Lee Morgan said.

"We are currently seeking information from the public in regard to this vehicle."

The killer was possibly armed and a danger to the community, Det Supt Morgan said.

"Police are urging the offender to phone police and arrange a safe surrender," he said.

"In the interest of ensuring everybody's safety this matter needs to be resolved quickly."

A crime scene established at Union Terrace would remain until further notice, police said.

A witness has reportedly told police they saw two cars leaving the area.
