A US father has shared a heartbreaking photo of his son comforting his sister in the final hours of her battle with cancer.

Matt Sooter posted the photo on Facebook, showing six-year-old Jackson rubbing the forehead of four-year-old Adalynn at the hospital.

A matter of hours later, Adalynn passed away after her two-year battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a high-grade brain tumour in children.

"A little boy should not have to say goodbye to his partner in crime, his playmate, his best friend, his little sister," Mr Sooter wrote on Facebook.

"He doesn't want to leave her side and we won't make him."

According to the Washington Post, Adalynn underwent 33 radiation treatments in Arkansas, then 10 experimental chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments in Mexico to try to buy her more time.

"But they also tried to enjoy the moments they had left with Addy - a Make-A-Wish vacation to Walt Disney World to meet her favourite Frozen queen and her first trip to the beach," the newspaper said.

The post has been shared more than 1,000 times with many Facebook users expressing support.

"This picture speaks volumes. Jackson will cherish this forever! The love between a brother and his sister," one user said.

Another said: "Precious family. I have no words. Just heartbreak."
