A search is under way after a Sydney girl failed to turn up at school and her mobile phone was found nearby.

There are growing fears for Talita Kingi, 14, who was last seen wearing her school uniform on Queens Road in Westmead about 9.25am on Friday.

She did not arrive at school and her mobile phone was found on Central Avenue.

The teenager has a mild intellectual disability and police say her disappearance is totally out of character.

Talita is described as being of Pacific Islander appearance, with a medium build and about 155cm tall.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call triple zero.
