Federal funding for sea walls in Torres Strait Islands

The federal government has announced $12 million in funding for the repair and construction of sea walls in Torres Straits Island communities.

The federal funds match commitments from the Queensland government toward the project.

Torres Strait Mayor Fred Gela says every year Torres Strait Islanders experience significant losses when king tides hit the region, displacing families and damaging local infrastructure.

Mr Gela spoke to Marina Freri.
