Sixteen federal MPs and senators have failed to certify their expenses on time.

The Finance Department requires members of parliament to certify that their travel and other entitlement claims are within the law.

While Speaker Bronwyn Bishop is among a long list of MPs to have certified their claims for the latest publicly declared period, July to December 2014, many have not done so.

Government members who had not certified their claims by June 25 - according to the department's website - included Steve Ciobo, Senator Sean Edwards, Peter Hendy, Senator David Johnston and Fiona Scott.

Independents included Clive Palmer, Bob Katter and Senator John Madigan.

Labor MPs included Senator Carol Brown, Senator Stephen Conroy, Michael Danby, Alan Griffin, Jill Hall, Catherine King, Brendan O'Connor and Amanda Rishworth.
